Giants of Mont'e Prama
Archaeological Site Nuragic-era stone sculptures from Sardinia's prehistoric necropoleis
Near Cabras in Sardinia, the Mont’e Prama stone warriors and archers date to the Nuragic period; archaeological displays and restored statues attract researchers and museum visitors.
The Giants of Mont’e Prama are a group of large stone sculptures discovered in western Sardinia near the town of Cabras, attributed to the island’s Nuragic culture in the first millennium BCE. The sculptures include stylised human figures carved in local limestone and are important prehistoric artifacts from Sardinia.
Farmers first uncovered the sculptural fragments in 1974, prompting systematic excavations that recovered numerous statue parts and associated material. Conservation and reconstruction work have proceeded in stages since the initial discovery, and museum programmes have worked to interpret the finds within Nuragic archaeology.
The finds come from a field complex near Mont’e Prama in the province of Oristano, western Sardinia; many recovered fragments are conserved and exhibited locally in Cabras and in regional museums such as those in Cagliari.
