Getty Villa
Museum Museum of ancient Mediterranean art and antiquities
In Malibu, the Getty Villa recreates a Roman country house to display Greek, Roman and Etruscan antiquities, with formal gardens and sea views. Visitors come for ancient sculpture, fresco fragments and classical architecture.
The Getty Villa is a museum in the Los Angeles area built as an educational re-creation of a Roman country house and devoted to Greek, Roman and Etruscan antiquities. The complex reproduces architectural and garden features of classical villas to provide context for the ancient collection.
Galleries display sculpture, pottery, jewellery and decorative objects from the ancient Mediterranean, arranged to reflect archaeological and historical themes. The site places emphasis on the relationship between built spaces, gardens and the collections to suggest how objects would have been used and displayed in antiquity.
The villa includes a planted peristyle garden and outdoor spaces that follow classical design principles, supporting interpretation and special events alongside regular exhibitions and educational programmes.
The museum is located in the Pacific Palisades neighbourhood of Los Angeles, overlooking the coastal bluffs near the Pacific Coast Highway.
- Villa model and collection: Designed as a modern museum modeled on the Roman Villa dei Papiri, concentrating on ancient Mediterranean art and archaeological objects.
What to See #
- Peristyle garden: A reconstructed Roman-style peristyle garden modeled on classical villa gardens, used as a focal point for interpretation and outdoor sculpture.
- Antiquities galleries: Galleries housing Greek, Roman and Etruscan antiquities with archaeological objects and decorative items from the ancient Mediterranean world.
- Terraces and courtyards: Outdoor terraces and exhibition courtyards that replicate aspects of an ancient Roman villa and offer views over the surrounding neighbourhood toward the Pacific.
How to Get to Getty Villa #
The Getty Villa is in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles along the coast. By car it’s reached from the Los Angeles area via I‑10 west to the I‑405 north, then exit to Pacific Coast Highway (CA‑1) and follow signs to the Villa; expect roughly 20-40 minutes from central Los Angeles depending on traffic (about 15-25 miles). The Villa has on‑site parking (paid); public transit connections require a transfer (for example to Santa Monica then a local bus/taxi) - there is no direct Metro rail stop at the Villa.
Tips for Visiting Getty Villa #
- A timed-entry reservation is required-reserve your entry slot in advance and arrive a little before your window to pass through the Villa's entry procedures without stress.
- Start with the outdoor Roman-style gardens and terraces before the galleries; many visitors rush the indoor galleries and miss the reconstructed garden architecture and Pacific views from the outer terraces.
- Parking at the Villa fills early on weekends-if your slot is later in the day, consider arriving early to walk the gardens and use the on-site map to follow the intended one-way route through the galleries.
