Gergeti Trinity Church

Gergeti Trinity Church (Tsminda Sameba) is a 14th-century Georgian Orthodox church perched on a mountain slope above the village of Stepantsminda, near Mount Kazbek in the Greater Caucasus. The isolated stone church is notable for its dramatic setting and clear views toward the glaciated slopes of Mount Kazbek.

The simple single-dome church and adjacent small cemetery are the primary features at the site; the church’s stone construction and high-altitude location make it a distinctive example of medieval Georgian ecclesiastical architecture. Visitors come for the church itself and for the panoramic mountain scenery.

The church was built in the 14th century and has served as a local parish church and pilgrimage destination; it has been maintained and conserved at various times to preserve its fabric. Its remote hilltop position made it a safe refuge in turbulent periods and a landmark for local communities.

Gergeti Trinity sits above the town of Stepantsminda (formerly Kazbegi) in the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region, at the foot of Mount Kazbek and within the Kazbegi national landscape, approximately a two-hour drive north of the Georgian capital, Tbilisi.
