Gerdkuh (also written Girdkuh) is a medieval mountain fortress site in Semnan province, northern Iran, notable as a Nizari Ismaili stronghold. The fortress occupies a steep conical rock and commands views over the surrounding plain.
Visitors encounter ruined defensive walls, terraces and the traces of cisterns and access structures cut into the rock; the site is of interest for archaeology and early Islamic period military architecture rather than for visitor facilities. The steep, rocky location means access is challenging and generally limited to experienced walkers or researchers.
Held by the Nizari Ismailis during the 12th and 13th centuries, the fortress resisted Mongol attempts to capture it and was one of several isolated strongholds that fell in the mid-13th century during the Mongol campaigns. Its name reflects the rounded profile of the rock outcrop.
Gerdkuh sits in Semnan province not far from the city of Damghan in north-central Iran, rising sharply from the surrounding arid plain.
