The Georgia Guidestones were a granite monument erected in 1980 in Elbert County, Georgia, USA, consisting of several large carved slabs arranged as a modern megalithic structure with guidance inscriptions in multiple languages. The structure attracted attention for its inscription content and the mystery surrounding its anonymous commissioning.

The Guidestones consisted of a central set of slabs standing about 19 feet tall, with a capstone and messages in eight modern languages plus an auxiliary message in four ancient scripts. The inscriptions presented ten guideline statements on population, governance, and environmental stewardship that generated debate and curiosity.

The monument was commissioned by an individual using the pseudonym “R.C. Christian” and was placed on a donated site near Elberton, an area known for granite production. In July 2022 the site was severely damaged by an explosion and the remaining structure was removed by county authorities shortly thereafter.

The Guidestones stood on a rural site near Elberton in northeastern Georgia, reachable by road from the town and visible from local county routes prior to their removal.

  • Design and inscriptions: Erected in 1980 from large carved granite slabs with inscriptions in eight modern languages and four ancient languages on a capstone.
  • Damage and removal: The monument was heavily damaged by an explosion in July 2022 and subsequently removed by local authorities; the original site remains a point of public and historical interest.
