George Washington Memorial Parkway
Park Scenic parkway along the Potomac, commemorating Washington
The George Washington Memorial Parkway runs along the Potomac north of Mount Vernon, offering river overlooks, picnic areas and trails managed by the National Park Service; drivers and cyclists use it to reach Arlington and waterfront sites.
George Washington Memorial Parkway is a federally managed scenic roadway and parkland corridor along the Potomac River in the Washington, D.C. and northern Virginia area. It was established and is managed to provide a memorial boulevard and park-like public access along a stretch of the Potomac.
The parkway is used as a scenic driving route and recreation corridor with roadside overlooks, picnic areas and trail access; it links a series of riverfront parks and historic sites and is frequently used by cyclists and pedestrians on the adjacent multiuse trail. Important public sites reachable from the parkway include historic estates, riverfront marshes and memorial islands.
Originally developed in the 20th century as part of efforts to preserve riverfront land and create commemorative parkways, the corridor has been expanded and managed by the National Park Service. Over time it has been maintained both as a transportation route and as a linear park providing public access to the Potomac shoreline.
The parkway follows the Potomac River corridor in northern Virginia and adjacent District of Columbia riverfront, providing a continuous park-maintained route between the Mount Vernon area in the south and parkland near Arlington and the Capital Beltway to the north.
- Trail access: A multiuse trail runs parallel to much of the route and is widely used by cyclists and pedestrians for suburban recreation and commuting.
What to See #
- Mount Vernon: Provides direct public access to George Washington's plantation home and grounds, including visitor facilities at the historic estate.
- Dyke Marsh: A tidal marsh and wildlife area on the Potomac River offering trails, birdwatching and a mix of freshwater and brackish wetlands along the parkway corridor.
- Theodore Roosevelt Island: An island memorial in the Potomac with walking trails and formal memorial plantings maintained as a public park accessible from the parkway network.
