George Town UNESCO World Heritage Site
Area Historic colonial-era city centre with multicultural heritage
George Town’s UNESCO district in Penang mixes British colonial buildings, Chinese shophouses and clan jetties. Visitors come for hawker stalls and street food, street‑art trails, restored mansions and cultural festivals such as Thaipusam.
George Town UNESCO World Heritage Site is the historic port and urban centre on Penang Island, Malaysia, and was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2008 as part of the Historic Cities of the Straits of Malacca.
The site is notable for its dense rows of two- and three-storey shophouses, ornate clan temples, colonial public buildings and active waterfront jetties; many structures date from the late 18th to early 20th centuries. The waterfront contains several 19th-century wooden clan jetties, including the well-known Chew Jetty, and the area displays Chinese, Malay, Indian and European architectural influences in close proximity.
Street-level highlights include restored merchant houses such as the Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion (Blue Mansion), colonial-era forts and administrative buildings, and numerous religious sites - mosques, Hindu temples and Chinese clan temples - within a compact urban grid. There is also a well-known program of public murals and street art that has become an informal draw for walking tours and photography.
George Town was established as a British entrepôt by the East India Company in 1786 under Captain Francis Light and developed through the 19th century as a multicultural trading port. Over time the town retained intact shophouse streets, clan settlements and public buildings that reflect successive waves of trade and migration.
The UNESCO zone sits on the northeast coast of Penang Island, across the Penang Strait from the mainland town of Butterworth, and forms the historic core of the present-day city of George Town.
- UNESCO inscription: Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2008 as part of the Historic Cities of the Straits of Malacca.
- Clan jetties: Several clan jetties line the waterfront and date from the 19th century; they are timber piers with stilt houses that remain inhabited and accessible on foot.
- Best time to visit: Street art and conserved shophouses are concentrated along streets such as Armenian Street and Lebuh Armenian, making early morning or late afternoon good times for walking tours.
