The Genoese fortress in Sudak is a large medieval fortification on the Black Sea coast of Crimea, constructed and expanded by the Genoese in the medieval period. The complex comprises multiple lines of walls, towers and a central citadel.
The site includes an inner citadel with defensive towers and an outer circuit of walls running along the coastal hillside, giving views over Sudak and the sea. Many of the masonry walls and towers remain visible and accessible to visitors on foot paths within the site.
The fortress grew into its present form largely during Genoese control in the 14th century when Sudak served as a trading and maritime outpost; earlier Byzantine and local fortifications underlie the medieval structures. It remained an important regional stronghold through successive political changes and has been the subject of archaeological and conservation work.
The fortress stands immediately above the town of Sudak on Crimea’s southern coast, overlooking the Black Sea and close to the modern town centre.
