Gennargentu
Mountains Mountain massif forming Sardinia's highest peaks
Sardinia’s Gennargentu massif offers granite peaks, beech forests, and mountain villages; hikers follow marked trails to ridgelines, alpine meadows, and pastoral landscapes.
Gennargentu is a mountainous massif in central-eastern Sardinia that contains the island’s highest peaks. Its best-known summit is Punta La Marmora, which reaches 1,834 meters above sea level.
The Gennargentu massif is part of Sardinia’s geological backbone and has been used historically for pastoralism and seasonal grazing; local communities and shepherding traditions persist in the highlands. There is no single historic monument but rather a long human use of the upland environment.
Gennargentu sits in central-eastern Sardinia within the island’s interior, largely in the province of Nuoro and near the town of Aritzo and villages such as Desulo and Fonni. The massif dominates the interior landscape and is several tens of kilometers from the Sardinian coast.
