An equestrian bronze monument to Civil War General William Tecumseh Sherman in Washington, D.C. The statue was sculpted by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and was dedicated in 1903.
The work depicts Sherman mounted on horseback accompanied by an allegorical figure and is set on a substantial plinth within a circular plaza. It is a prominent example of early 20th-century American monumental sculpture.
The monument was commissioned as a national memorial to Sherman’s military service and produced by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, a leading American sculptor of the period; it was unveiled to the public in 1903.
Located at the northwestern edge of President’s Park on Sherman Circle at the intersection of 15th Street NW and Pennsylvania Avenue, it sits close to the White House and Lafayette Square.
