Gelati Monastery

Gelati Monastery is a medieval monastic complex in the Imereti region of western Georgia, founded in 1106 by King David IV of Georgia. It is notable for its well-preserved medieval architecture and extensive interior frescoes.

The complex’s main highlights are the twelfth-century cathedral with a large mosaic of the Virgin Mary and extensive fresco cycles, the monastic academy buildings, and several smaller chapels. The site occupies a compact hilltop ensemble with courtyards and terraces that visitors typically cover on a short walking route.

Gelati was established as both a religious center and a center of learning by King David IV in 1106; the academy attracted scholars and scribes during the medieval Georgian Golden Age. Over the centuries the complex suffered damage from earthquakes and required restorations, but many original frescoes and inscriptions survive.

The monastery sits on a wooded hill a short distance north of the city of Kutaisi - roughly 5 km northeast of the city center - overlooking the Rioni valley.
