The Gegham mountains are a volcanic highland range in central Armenia known for volcanic domes, plateaus and upland pastures. The range forms part of the Armenian highland and includes numerous lava domes and small crater lakes.

The area offers highland hiking, open steppe and meadow landscapes, and a scattering of volcanic cones and rocky outcrops. Visitors find hiking routes, alpine pastures and sites of traditional shepherding rather than developed tourist infrastructure.

The Gegham volcanic field formed through repeated volcanic activity in the region and has been inhabited by humans since prehistoric times, leaving archaeological traces in places. Volcanic geology and weathering have shaped the present-day ridges and basins.

Geographically the range sits in central Armenia within the Armenian highland; it occupies upland terrain between major lowland basins and lies within driving distance of regional towns and road corridors.

  • Best time to visit: Best visited from late spring to early autumn when mountain passes and higher trails are free of snow and mountain weather is more stable.

How to Get to Gegham mountains #

The Gegham mountains are accessed by road from Yerevan: drive east toward Lake Sevan and the towns of Gavar/Sevan, then continue on local roads into the Gegham range to reach trailheads. Many hiking access points and smaller roads lead up into the mountains from the Sevan/Gavar area.

Tips for Visiting Gegham mountains #

  • Plan trips in late spring through early autumn when mountain passes and dirt roads are generally open and the alpine meadows and crater lakes are most accessible.
  • Access the high volcanic cones such as Azhdahak from trailheads near Gavar or Vardenis and use a local guide or 4x4 for the rough forest‑and‑steppe tracks to reach remote craters safely.
  • Allocate time for lesser-known features-small crater lakes and ancient petroglyph sites in the Gegham range are easily missed by visitors who stick to the main peaks.
