The Gegham mountains are a volcanic highland range in central Armenia known for volcanic domes, plateaus and upland pastures. The range forms part of the Armenian highland and includes numerous lava domes and small crater lakes.
The area offers highland hiking, open steppe and meadow landscapes, and a scattering of volcanic cones and rocky outcrops. Visitors find hiking routes, alpine pastures and sites of traditional shepherding rather than developed tourist infrastructure.
The Gegham volcanic field formed through repeated volcanic activity in the region and has been inhabited by humans since prehistoric times, leaving archaeological traces in places. Volcanic geology and weathering have shaped the present-day ridges and basins.
Geographically the range sits in central Armenia within the Armenian highland; it occupies upland terrain between major lowland basins and lies within driving distance of regional towns and road corridors.
