Gefion Fountain
Monument Copenhagen fountain featuring the Norse goddess Gefion
Bronze fountain in Copenhagen depicting the Norse figure Gefion and oxen beside the harbor, near Kastellet and the Langelinie promenade. Tourists stop for photos and short walks toward the waterfront and nearby museums.
The Gefion Fountain is a large ornamental fountain in Copenhagen that features a sculptural group of the Norse goddess Gefion driving oxen. The bronze group was created for a public fountain and was unveiled in the early 20th century.
The fountain’s central sculptural group depicts Gefion and four powerful oxen carved in bronze, set in a circular pool that sits adjacent to the waterfront. It is a major photo spot and a common stop on walking routes that include the harbor and the nearby Little Mermaid statue.
The fountain was funded by brewer Carl Jacobsen and executed by sculptor Anders Bundgaard; it was unveiled to the public in 1908. Since then it has been maintained as a civic monument and a prominent example of figurative public sculpture in Copenhagen.
The Gefion Fountain stands at the northern edge of Copenhagen’s central harbour promenade, close to the Langelinie promenade and the Kastellet citadel. It fronts the sea and is easily reached from Copenhagen’s central districts.
- Central Copenhagen location: Sits on the waterfront near Kastellet and within easy walking distance of the Little Mermaid, making it a common stop on central Copenhagen walking routes.
- Best time to visit: Best experienced in early morning light when crowds are smaller and photographic reflections on the pool are clearest.
How to Get to Gefion Fountain #
Take public rail to Østerport station (served by Copenhagen S‑trains and regional trains) and then walk to the waterfront: the Gefion Fountain is about a 10-15 minute walk (roughly 700-900 m) from Østerport, along Nordre Toldbod/Toldbodgade beside Kastellet and Langelinie. From Copenhagen Central Station it is a short drive (about 2-3 km, roughly 10 minutes) heading northeast on H.C. Andersens Boulevard/Øster Voldgade toward the harbour; street parking is limited, so using Østerport by rail is usually easiest.
Tips for Visiting Gefion Fountain #
- Visit early in the morning (before most cruise-ship and tour-bus arrivals) or just after sunset when the fountain is lit-both times give better light and far fewer people for photos.
- Approach from the Kastellet/Churchill Park side rather than the busy main road; the pedestrian paths and ramparts there offer quieter, framed viewpoints of the sculpture and harbor.
- Walk the low quay around the fountain to see close-up sculptural details and the artist's inscriptions-many visitors only view the fountain from the main promenade and miss these details.
Best Time to Visit Gefion Fountain #
The Gefion Fountain is best seen in late spring through summer when weather is mild and the waterfront is lively.
