Gaziantep Castle
Castle Fortified castle dominating Gaziantep with ancient city walls
Crowning Gaziantep’s old city, Gaziantep Castle rests on Roman‑Byzantine foundations with Ottoman restorations; visitors climb battlements for city views and pair a castle visit with the city’s renowned baklava and regional cuisine.
Gaziantep Castle is a prominent hilltop fortress overlooking the city of Gaziantep in southeastern Turkey. The site has visible masonry work and fortifications that reflect long occupation and rebuilding across Byzantine, medieval and Ottoman periods.
The castle occupies a compact fortified hill in the old town and provides panoramic views across Gaziantep from its ramparts. Walkable sections of curtain wall and towers allow visitors to see the city layout and the surrounding urban neighbourhoods.
The site has foundations and masonry dating back to Roman and Byzantine periods and underwent rebuilding and repairs during medieval and Ottoman times, resulting in the layered fabric seen today. It served a defensive role for the city across successive periods and has been conserved as a historic monument in the modern era.
The castle sits on a low hill in central Gaziantep within walking distance of the city’s historic bazaar and downtown districts, in Gaziantep Province of southeastern Turkey.
