Gavutu is a small island in the Central Province of the Solomon Islands, part of the Nggela (Florida) Islands group near Tulagi. It is known for its role in early Pacific War operations during World War II.

In early August 1942 Gavutu and the neighboring islet Tanambogo were occupied by Japanese forces and were assaulted by US Marine and Army units during the Solomon Islands campaign; the fighting on Gavutu-Tanambogo took place on 7-9 August 1942.
