Gauḍa (also spelled Gaur) is the archaeological area of a medieval city in what is now northern West Bengal, India. It contains extensive ruins of walls, mosques, tombs and other structures from periods when the city served as a regional capital.

The settlement was an important political and economic centre in medieval Bengal and served as a capital for various dynasties across centuries. Its ruins include large brick structures and fragmentary public buildings that document urban and architectural developments in the region.

Control of the city shifted over time with regional powers; the surviving remains reflect periods of prosperity followed by decline, inundation and eventual abandonment. Excavations and conservation have revealed walls, foundations and a layout of streets and monumental buildings.

The ruins sit close to the modern India-Bangladesh border in Malda district of West Bengal, near the town of Chapai Nawabganj on the Bangladeshi side and the Indian town of Malda/Kalusha region.

  • Historical importance: The site is the ruins of the medieval city historically known as Gaur or Gauda, located on the India-Bangladesh border region and associated with the medieval Bengal polity.
