Gath (city)

Gath is an ancient Philistine city in the southern Levant commonly identified with the archaeological site Tell es-Safi in Israel’s Southern District. The site is a large tell with visible remains spanning the Bronze Age, Iron Age and later medieval periods.

Inhabited from the Bronze Age and flourishing in the Iron Age as one of the principal Philistine cities, the site appears in ancient texts and later saw medieval reuse including the Crusader-period fortress called Blanche Garde. Modern archaeological work at Tell es-Safi began in the 20th century and has continued with systematic excavations since the 1990s.

The tell sits inland in Israel’s Southern District (coordinates provided), on the southern edge of the coastal plain above the Elah Valley region. It is operated as a national park and lies within the modern agricultural landscape of central southern Israel.

• Access: Managed as Tell es-Safi National Park with public access to the tel and marked trails; guided visits are available through local archaeological programs.
• Biblical association: Associated in the Hebrew Bible with the Philistine pentapolis and with the figure Goliath, a common point of interpretation for visitors interested in biblical archaeology.

What to See #

• Tell es-Safi (archaeological mound): An archaeological tell identified by many scholars with the biblical city of Gath, containing remains from the Bronze and Iron Ages through later medieval phases. Excavations have exposed Philistine-era houses, fortification walls and a Crusader-period fortress known locally as Blanche Garde.
• Crusader fortress (Blanche Garde): Remains of a medieval Crusader fortress and associated structures built in the 12th century and later reused in subsequent periods, visible as stone foundations and walls on the site.
• Excavation trenches and visitor area: A small on-site visitor area and excavation trenches where ongoing digs and published field reports document finds including Philistine pottery, imported ceramics and city-scale fortifications.
