Gartenpalais Liechtenstein

The Gartenpalais Liechtenstein is a Baroque city palace in central Vienna belonging to the princely House of Liechtenstein, built as a private urban residence in the early 18th century. It is one of two principal Liechtenstein palaces in Vienna and has long housed parts of the Liechtenstein art collection.

Highlights include richly ornamented state rooms and a small formal palace garden that illustrate aristocratic city-palace design of the Baroque period. The palace interior is arranged to display paintings, sculpture and period decoration from the princely collection and is visited on scheduled tours and exhibitions.

The palace was constructed for the Liechtenstein family in the Baroque era and later adapted for museum use to show pieces from the family collection; conservation and occasional public exhibitions continue to shape how the building is used. Ownership has remained with the princely family, who continue to lend works to and manage displays here and in their other Vienna properties.

The Gartenpalais sits in central Vienna, on Bankgasse in the 1st/innere districts, within short walking distance of other historic palaces and museums in the city centre.
