The Garrison Border Town of Elvas and its Fortifications is a fortified frontier town in the Évora District of Portugal noted for its extensive system of military architecture. The complex illustrates large-scale bastioned and detached fortresses integrated with the town and its water supply.

The site comprises a series of defensive works - city walls, bastions, detached forts and outlying fortresses - that encircle and dominate the town. Visitors can see major fort elements and walk sections of the ramparts and glacis, with views over the surrounding plain toward the Spanish border.

The defensive system was built and modified primarily between the 17th and 19th centuries to protect Portugal’s eastern frontier. Military architects and engineers adapted bastion and star-fort designs and integrated the town, forts and an aqueduct into a single defensive complex.

The fortified town sits in eastern Portugal within the municipality of Elvas in Évora District, close to the border with Spain and occupying a strategic position on the Alentejo plain.
