Gargano National Park

Gargano National Park is a protected area on the Gargano promontory in the Apulia region of southern Italy, established to conserve the area’s forests, coastline and cultural sites. The park encompasses upland woodland, karst limestone terrain and a rugged Adriatic coastline.

Key attractions include the dense Foresta Umbra, a network of hiking trails, coastal cliffs, sea caves and beaches, plus historic towns and pilgrimage sites on the promontory. The park supports a mix of Mediterranean habitats and traditional rural landscapes that draw hikers, birdwatchers and coastal visitors.

The park was established in the late 20th century to safeguard the Gargano massif and its cultural and ecological values; management combines nature conservation with protection of historic sites and rural land uses.

Gargano occupies the northernmost spur of Apulia facing the Adriatic Sea, forming the prominent ‘spur’ on the map of Italy’s boot; it lies along the region’s eastern coastline.
