Gardens of the Palácio de Cristal

The Gardens of the Palácio de Cristal are historic public gardens in Porto that occupy the grounds once surrounding the city’s 19th century Crystal Palace and offer prominent views over the Douro River.

The gardens were developed in the mid 19th century to accompany the Palácio de Cristal, an iron-and-glass exhibition building that stood on the site; the palace was demolished in 1951 but the gardens were preserved and reworked over time as a public park. The site reflects 19th and 20th century garden design layers.

The gardens sit close to Porto’s city center on a hillside above the Douro River, within easy walking distance of central neighborhoods and transport hubs.
