Garden Route District Municipality

Garden Route District Municipality is the district-level authority covering the coastal Garden Route corridor in South Africa’s Western Cape province. The district administers a series of coastal towns, inland karoo areas and conservation landscapes.

The region contains a string of well-known towns and natural features including beaches, lagoons, indigenous forests and protected coastal reserves. Popular activities in the district include beach tourism, forest walks, lagoon boating and wildlife viewing.

The municipal structure reflects administrative arrangements for the Garden Route region established in the post-apartheid era to manage local services and regional planning; the area has long been a tourism and agricultural zone dating back to colonial settlement.

The district sits along the southern coast of the Western Cape, covering towns and countryside roughly between Mossel Bay in the west and coastal settlements eastwards toward the border with the Eastern Cape.
