Garbh Eileach
Island Uninhabited Inner Hebrides island with historic ruins
An uninhabited island in the Inner Hebrides with early-medieval ruins and rocky shorelines; sailors and sea-kayakers land to inspect ruins and birdlife away from the mainland.
Garbh Eileach is an uninhabited island in the Garvellachs archipelago off the west coast of Scotland, within the Inner Hebrides. It is one of the rocky islands forming the small group in the Firth of Lorn.
The island has rugged, rocky coasts and supports seabird colonies and coastal marine habitats; it is visited by private boats for natural-history observation and short landings. There are no regular visitor facilities or services on the island.
Historically the Garvellachs were used intermittently for grazing and seasonal visitation; there is no modern permanent population on Garbh Eileach. The wider archipelago contains early medieval monastic remains on other islands in the group.
Garbh Eileach lies between the larger islands of Mull and Jura in Argyll and Bute and is accessed by private boat from the west-coast mainland and nearby islands.
- Access: Uninhabited island forming part of a small archipelago; access is by private boat only and landing is dependent on sea conditions.
- Wildlife and shore: Offers coastal wildlife viewing and rocky shore habitat typical of the inner Hebridean islands.
