Garðar is the site of the principal Norse ecclesiastical centre in southern Greenland during the medieval period, located in present-day Kujalleq municipality. It functioned as the bishopric seat for the Norse Eastern Settlement and is represented today by stone foundations and landscape remains.
Visitors encounter remains of the cathedral foundations and several farmstead layouts that illustrate the Norse settlement pattern in southern Greenland. The site is primarily archaeological in character with exposed foundation stones and field clearing indicative of medieval occupation.
Garðar developed as a religious and administrative centre for the Norse communities in Greenland and remained in use through the Norse medieval period before abandonment in the later medieval centuries. Archaeological work has documented the layout of ecclesiastical and domestic structures.
