Garamba National Park

Garamba National Park is a protected area in northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo that conserves savanna, woodland and riverine habitats. It has been known for populations of large savanna mammals and for its role in regional conservation efforts.

The park’s landscapes include open savannas, gallery forest along rivers and seasonal floodplains where wildlife can concentrate. Wildlife sightings historically included elephants, buffalo and large predators as well as diverse birdlife.

Garamba was designated to protect its wildlife and landscapes; it has been the focus of anti-poaching and conservation initiatives over many decades. The park’s management history reflects the challenges of protecting wide-ranging species in a remote, cross-border region.

Garamba lies in the Haut-Uélé area of northeastern DRC, close to the country’s international borders and within a remote, lightly populated part of central Africa.
