Garamba National Park is a protected area in northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo that conserves savanna, woodland and riverine habitats. It has been known for populations of large savanna mammals and for its role in regional conservation efforts.

The park’s landscapes include open savannas, gallery forest along rivers and seasonal floodplains where wildlife can concentrate. Wildlife sightings historically included elephants, buffalo and large predators as well as diverse birdlife.

Garamba was designated to protect its wildlife and landscapes; it has been the focus of anti-poaching and conservation initiatives over many decades. The park’s management history reflects the challenges of protecting wide-ranging species in a remote, cross-border region.

Garamba lies in the Haut-Uélé area of northeastern DRC, close to the country’s international borders and within a remote, lightly populated part of central Africa.

  • Conservation focus: Located in northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, the park protects savanna and riverine habitats that have supported populations of large mammals.

Tips for Visiting Garamba National Park #

  • Only plan a trip through a reputable safari operator or conservation organisation and coordinate with the park authorities (ICCN) in advance-Garamba is remote and visits require permits, experienced guides and ranger support.
  • Access is typically via the regional hub of Dungu; expect limited facilities inside the park and schedule travel so you arrive in daylight-many roads and tracks become difficult when wet, so operators prefer the dry season for reliable game-viewing.
  • Confirm up-to-date security and health advice from embassies and your operator before travel; wildlife viewing often involves long drives and escorted patrols rather than open, self-guided safaris, so plan logistics well ahead.

Best Time to Visit Garamba National Park #

The dry season is generally the best time to visit Garamba for wildlife viewing and easier park access.

Dry season (best for wildlife viewing)
Dec-Mar · 23-32°C
Drier conditions concentrate wildlife around water sources, improving sightings and making travel within the park easier.
Wet season (more rain, limited access)
Apr-Nov · 24-32°C
Higher rainfall can make roads and tracks muddy and reduce visibility, and some areas may be harder to reach.
