Ganghwa Island is an island and county within Incheon municipality in northwestern South Korea, located at the mouth of the Han River and adjacent to the Yellow Sea. It has long held strategic and cultural importance due to its position controlling approaches to the Korean capital region.

Key attractions include prehistoric dolmen fields that are part of Korea’s recognized megalithic heritage, coastal fortifications such as Gwangseongbo Fortress, and a range of historical sites dating from medieval through modern periods. The island also offers rural landscapes, tidal flats, and coastal scenery visited for hiking and cultural tourism.

Historically the island was strategically important in regional conflicts and diplomacy in the 19th century and earlier; remains of fortifications and historic sites reflect that role. Today it is connected to the mainland by bridges and serves as a cultural and recreational area within the Incheon region.

Ganghwa Island lies off the west coast of Korea within Incheon jurisdiction, just across the estuary from the mainland and accessible by road bridges and ferry connections from the Incheon area.

  • Heritage sites: The island is part of Incheon municipality and is noted for archaeological dolmen sites included in Korea's contribution to the World Heritage listing for megalithic culture.

What to See #

  • Ganghwa dolmens: A cluster of prehistoric megalithic tombs on the island that form part of the broader UNESCO-listed dolmen sites in Korea.
  • Gwangseongbo Fortress: A coastal fortification and historic stronghold on the island that preserves ramparts and bastions from the late medieval and early modern periods.

How to Get to Ganghwa Island #

Ganghwa Island is connected to the mainland by road bridges and is reachable by car from Incheon and Seoul. From central Seoul or Incheon drive over the island bridges (follow signs for Ganghwa/Ganghwa-gun); drive times vary with traffic but are commonly around 1-1.5 hours from Seoul.

Regular intercity buses run from major terminals in Seoul and Incheon to Ganghwa’s bus terminals; local buses and taxis serve villages and historic sites on the island once you arrive.

Tips for Visiting Ganghwa Island #

  • Time a visit for spring blossom or autumn foliage if you want scenic colors; otherwise plan weekdays or early mornings to avoid Korean holiday and weekend traffic to the island.
  • Allow extra travel time by road - Ganghwa is reached by bridge from Incheon and can back up in peak hours and on public holidays, so set off well before planned activities.
  • Include the northern dolmen sites and island museums on your itinerary and consider a local guide or tourism centre help - the dolmen clusters are spread out and easier to visit with local routing advice.
  • Explore lesser-known coastal paths and tidal flats at low tide - these quieter areas are often missed by day-trip itineraries that stick to the main attractions.
