Gandzasar monastery

Gandzasar monastery is a medieval Armenian Apostolic monastery located on a hill near the village of Vank in the region administered as Khojaly District. It is renowned for its well-preserved 13th-century architecture and stone-carved decoration.

The complex attracts visitors for its richly carved stonework, khachkars (cross-stones) and the central domed church, which is an important example of Armenian medieval ecclesiastical architecture. The site functions as both a historic monument and a place of religious significance.

The monastery complex was built in the early 13th century under the patronage of the Armenian prince Hasan-Jalal Dawla and served as a religious and cultural center for the region; it has undergone repairs and restorations over the centuries. It retained importance as a diocesan seat and repository of manuscripts and carvings.

Geographically it stands on a wooded hill overlooking a valley in the mountainous area historically known as Nagorno-Karabakh; the site is in the administrative area recorded as Khojaly District and is accessed from nearby settlements in the upland landscape.
