Galeras

Galeras is an active stratovolcano in southwestern Colombia, located in Nariño Department near the city of Pasto. Its summit reaches about 4,276 m and the volcano is one of Colombia’s most active and closely monitored.

The volcano’s main features are the summit crater and nearby fumarolic fields; scientists and trained guides visit for observation when authorities permit. Views of the crater rim and fumaroles are the main draws, but access is often restricted for safety and monitoring reasons.

Galeras has produced frequent eruptions in the historical record and has been the site of deadly eruptive episodes, including a notable 1993 event that killed researchers and visitors. Ongoing monitoring by Colombian geological services focuses on gas emissions, seismicity, and deformation.

The volcano sits a few kilometers west of the city of Pasto in the Andean highlands of Nariño, making Pasto the usual base for any permitted scientific or guided approaches.
