How to Get to Galaţi#

Galaţi is easiest reached by rail or intercity coach from Bucharest, with regional airports (Bacău) offering nearer options. The city’s main rail hub is Gara Galaţi and coaches arrive at the central Autogara Galaţi, both well placed for the city centre.

By Air

Bucharest Henri Coandă (OTP): The main international gateway for reaching Galaţi. From OTP take the STB express bus 780 to Gara de Nord (Bucureşti Nord) - journey ~40-60 minutes and a single STB ticket is typically around 3 RON - then catch a CFR InterRegio train to Galaţi (Gara Galaţi), which takes about 2.5-3.5 hours and costs roughly 35-60 RON depending on train type and discounts. Alternatively you can take a direct coach from Bucharest coach stations (see the Buses paragraph) or book a private transfer/taxi from the airport to Galaţi (typically several hundred RON and ~3 hours).

Bacău (BCM): A closer regional option with some international connections. From Bacău Airport you can reach Galaţi by regional coach or taxi; bus journeys take roughly 2-2.5 hours and usually cost in the 30-50 RON range. There are also CFR regional train connections in this corridor (see Trains paragraph) though some itineraries require a change; taxis and private transfers from the airport will be faster but more expensive (a few hundred RON).

By Train & Bus

Train: Galaţi is served by CFR Călători at Gara Galaţi (the city’s main station). The most common long-distance rail link is Bucureşti Nord → Galaţi (InterRegio services) taking about 2.5-3.5 hours; expect fares around 35-60 RON for InterRegio and lower for regional trains. There are also regional connections via Tecuci and Bârlad for travel around Moldavia - buy tickets at the station or online at cfrcalatori.ro.

Bus: Intercity coaches run frequently between Bucharest and Galaţi (operators include Atlassib and other private carriers); travel time is typically 3-4 hours and fares are commonly 30-60 RON depending on operator and booking time. Coaches arrive at the central Autogara Galaţi (city bus station); local bus connections and taxis can take you onward from the terminal.

How to Get Around Galaţi#

Galaţi is compact and easy to navigate: local buses and taxis cover city travel while CFR trains and intercity coaches are the most practical ways to arrive and travel regionally. For most visitors a mix of walking in the centre, occasional bus rides and Bolt/taxi trips works best.

  • Local buses (Transurb) (2-4 RON) - Local buses form the backbone of getting around Galaţi and cover the city and suburbs. Tickets are low-cost (typically 2-4 RON) and must be purchased/validated before or on boarding at kiosks or from the driver depending on the line. Frequencies are reasonable during the day but services thin out in the evening, so check timetables for late journeys.
  • Taxis & ride-hailing (Bolt) (10-30 RON) - Metered taxis are convenient and inexpensive for short hops inside the city - most short trips cost 10-30 RON. Bolt operates in Galaţi and is often cheaper and more transparent than traditional taxis; always confirm approximate fare before you ride and watch for evening surcharges.
  • CFR trains (regional / InterRegio) (10-60 RON) - Trains are the best option for regional travel - Gara Galaţi links to Bucureşti Nord, Tecuci, Bârlad and beyond. InterRegio services are faster and more comfortable; fares vary (roughly 20-60 RON depending on distance and train type). Buy tickets at the station, from ticket machines or on cfrcalatori.ro; expect occasional delays so allow buffer time for connections.
  • Intercity coaches (30-60 RON) - Coaches run frequent services to Bucharest and neighbouring cities and are often faster than regional trains for some routes. Operators like Atlassib and other private carriers operate departures from major coach stations; fares are usually 30-60 RON and online booking is common. Coaches arrive at Autogara Galaţi, close to the city centre.
  • Car hire (25-60 EUR/day) - Renting a car is useful if you plan to explore the Danube banks, nearby vineyards or the coast; daily rates typically start around 25-60 EUR depending on season and vehicle. Roads around Galaţi are straightforward but parking in the central area can be limited - look for paid parking zones and municipal lots.
  • Walking - Galaţi’s city centre is compact and pleasant to explore on foot - riverside promenades, parks and the main civic sights are within easy walking distance. Walking is the best way to soak up the city atmosphere and discover cafés and markets at a relaxed pace.
