Galata Bridge
Building Istanbul bridge over the Golden Horn with fishermen
Istanbul’s Galata Bridge links Karaköy and Eminönü, lined with anglers above seafood restaurants. Visitors cross for views of the Golden Horn, street-level eateries, and nearby ferry terminals.
The Galata Bridge spans the Golden Horn inlet in Istanbul, linking the districts of Karaköy (Galata) and Eminönü. It is a central, everyday crossing with a long history of bridges at this location and a strong role in city life.
Successive bridges have stood on this crossing for centuries; the modern two-level steel bridge at the site was completed in the late 20th century and replaced earlier structures. The location has long been a focal point for trade, transport and daily life connecting the old city to the neighborhoods north of the inlet.
Situated in central Istanbul across the Golden Horn, the bridge connects the Galata/Karaköy waterfront on the north side with the Eminönü area on the historic peninsula, within short distance of landmarks such as the Galata Tower and the Spice Bazaar.
- Best access: Pedestrian access and tram connections make it a practical crossing point between Karaköy and Eminönü; best experienced on foot to appreciate views along the Golden Horn.
What to See #
- Upper deck - road and tram: Upper deck carrying road traffic and the T1 tram line, linking the Beyoğlu (Karaköy) side with the Eminönü district near the historic peninsula.
