Galán is a large volcanic caldera in Catamarca Province, part of Argentina’s high-altitude Puna. Scientists and adventurous travellers visit for salt flats, fumarolic fields and broad, arid landscapes far above sea level.
How to Get to Galán #
The Galán caldera is accessed from the settlement of Antofagasta de la Sierra in Catamarca Province. Antofagasta de la Sierra is roughly 250-300 km northwest of the provincial capital, San Fernando del Valle de Catamarca, accessible by long, often unpaved roads. Visitors generally reach Antofagasta by regional flights to Catamarca or by long-distance buses, then hire 4x4 transport or join guided tours for the final approach; expect multiple hours on rough tracks.
Tips for Visiting Galán #
- Use a high-clearance 4x4 and hire a local guide; roads at those altitudes and in the puna can be rough and misleading.
- Acclimatize in Antofagasta de la Sierra (the nearest village) before attempting day trips - altitude here is serious.
- Bring sunscreen and windproof layers; the puna sun is intense and the wind cuts through everything.

Visit in the dry months (May-September) when high-altitude roads are most passable; avoid the austral summer rains.
