Gajajima is a small volcanic island administered as part of Kagoshima Prefecture in southern Japan. It belongs to the Satsunan/Tokara island group within the Ryukyu-Satsunan island chain.

The island is of volcanic origin and is characterised by rugged coastal cliffs and volcanic terrain rather than extensive flat land. Facilities and services on smaller islands in this group are generally limited and access is typically by boat, often on an infrequent schedule.

Gajajima has formed part of the island groups administered by Kagoshima Prefecture; its natural character reflects volcanic geology and subtropical maritime climate.

The island lies in southern Japan within Kagoshima Prefecture, southwest of the main Kyushu landmass.
