The Gailtal Alps are a mountain range in southern Austria forming part of the Southern Limestone Alps. They occupy terrain mainly within the federal states of Carinthia and East Tyrol.

The range offers alpine scenery, ridges and valleys used for hiking, alpine pastures, and small ski areas. The mountains run along the Gail valley and include a mix of limestone peaks and forested slopes.

Alpine settlement and pastoral use in the Gailtal region have a long local history, with modern recreational infrastructure developed in the 20th century to support mountain tourism. The geological character is typical of the Southern Limestone Alps.

The Gailtal Alps lie in southern Austria, predominantly within Carinthia and parts of East Tyrol, stretching along the Gail valley between lower river valleys and the higher main Alpine chains.

  • Geographic setting: The range forms a distinct ridge between the Drava valley to the north and the Gail valley to the south and is part of the Southern Limestone Alps.
