Gadara
Archaeological Site Ancient Hellenistic city with Roman ruins
Near Umm Qais, Gadara’s Hellenistic and Roman ruins - theater, colonnaded streets and tombs - sit above the Jordan Valley with views toward the Sea of Galilee; visitors explore ruins and local museums.
Gadara, commonly visited at the archaeological site of Umm Qais in northwest Jordan, was an important Hellenistic and Roman city and is noted for its theatre and urban remains. The site forms part of the classical Decapolis network of cities.
Founded and developed in Hellenistic and Roman periods, Gadara became an important regional center within the Decapolis and shows the typical urban features of that era. Over time the city declined and was later occupied in different periods, with archaeological excavations exposing the Roman plan and monuments.
Located in northwest Jordan near the border with Israel and Syria, the ruins occupy a ridge above the Yarmouk valley and are accessible from the city of Irbid and nearby towns.
- Decapolis city: Known today as Umm Qais, the site preserves remains from the Hellenistic and Roman periods as one of the Decapolis cities with a surviving theatre and city plan.
What to See #
- Theatre and urban grid: The excavated Greco-Roman town area includes a well-preserved theatre, colonnaded streets, and scattered public buildings showing Hellenistic and Roman urban planning.
- Scenic viewpoint: A prominent vantage point overlooking the Yarmouk River gorge and the Sea of Galilee region, often noted for its views.
How to Get to Gadara #
Gadara (the site at Umm Qais) is in northern Jordan’s Irbid Governorate, near the town of Umm Qais. It is reachable by car from Irbid or Amman - roughly 110-120 km north of Amman by road (travel time varies) and a short drive from the city of Irbid.
Public buses run from Amman to Irbid and service taxis run to Umm Qais; the archaeological site has a nearby parking/drop-off area and the ruins are a short walk from the entrance.
Tips for Visiting Gadara #
- Time your visit for late afternoon or sunset to take advantage of the sweeping views over the Sea of Galilee and the Golan Heights - the site's elevated terraces are at their most dramatic as the light softens.
- Start at the main visitor area and walk the colonnaded streets toward the theater and bath complexes so you don't miss the site plan; the theater and the visible street grid are central features that reward a slow circuit.
- Allow time to explore the Ottoman-era village ruins next to the ancient remains and the viewpoint terraces outside the main ruins; these overlooks are quieter than the core monument areas and offer excellent panoramas.
