Gad Cliff
Cliff Steep Jurassic Coast cliff with fossils and views
On England’s south coast, Gad Cliff marks a steep stretch of limestone and shale used by walkers on the South West Coast Path; people visit for cliff-top views and coastal geology.
Gad Cliff is a steep coastal cliff on the Dorset coast of southern England, forming part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site (inscribed 2001). It is a natural coastal promontory of the Isle of Purbeck facing the English Channel.
The cliff overlooks Kimmeridge Bay and exposes layers of Kimmeridge Clay and other Jurassic-age sediments, making it of interest to geologists and fossil hunters. The adjacent South West Coast Path runs along the headland, offering walking and seabird-viewing opportunities.
The feature is the product of long-term marine erosion and slope processes acting on Jurassic strata, and sections show landslip and coastal erosion sculpting the shoreline. Geologists study exposures here as part of the wider Jurassic Coast sequence.
Gad Cliff lies west of Kimmeridge and within the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset, with the nearest sizable town being Swanage to the northeast; it faces the English Channel and is reached from coastal roads and footpaths.
- Access: Accessible from the South West Coast Path; terrain is steep and locally unstable so stay on marked routes and away from cliff edges.
- Heritage: Forms part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, which covers about 95 miles of coastline.
How to Get to Gad Cliff #
Access is typically from nearby West Bay or the coastal road west of Bridport. The closest larger railheads are Dorchester and Weymouth; from there take a bus or taxi toward West Bay. Expect a short, sometimes steep walk from roadside car parks to the cliff edge.
Tips for Visiting Gad Cliff #
- Stay back from the cliff edge; the rock is undercut and there are active slumps.
- Park in West Bay and approach on foot - the view west toward Portland is better from the promontory than from the road.
- Bring a field guide for gulls and seabirds; early morning is best for birdwatching.
Best Time to Visit Gad Cliff #
Best visited in late spring to early autumn for safer cliff-top access and clearer views.
