Futarasan Shrine
Religious Site Shinto shrine in Nikko linked to UNESCO heritage
Shinto shrine in Nikko, near Toshogu, known for cedar-lined approaches and mountain worship. Visitors combine shrine visits with temple-hopping, seasonal festivals and hikes into the surrounding national park.
Futarasan Shrine (Futarasan Jinja) is a Shinto shrine in Nikkō, Tochigi Prefecture, dedicated to the deities of the nearby mountains and with origins in the late 8th century. It forms one of the three principal religious sites in central Nikkō and is part of the Shrines and Temples of Nikkō UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The complex contains a wooded approach and a sequence of shrine buildings and walkways, with the inner shrine (Okumiya) located on the slopes of Mount Nantai; many visitors combine a visit here with Tōshō-gū and Rinnō-ji. The precinct retains traditional Shinto architectural elements and a forested setting that reflects its role in mountain worship.
Futarasan was established in antiquity to venerate Mount Nantai; the site has been rebuilt and maintained across the centuries and its buildings represent a range of historical periods. The three Nikkō religious sites were inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 1999.
The shrine sits in central Nikkō within the bounds of Nikkō National Park, immediately adjacent to the Tōshō-gū and Rinnō-ji complexes and at the foot of Mount Nantai.
- UNESCO site: Part of the Shrines and Temples of Nikkō UNESCO World Heritage Site, commonly visited on the same itinerary as Tōshō-gū and Rinnō-ji.
What to See #
- Main shrine sites (Hongu and Okumiya): The shrine complex comprises three principal shrine sites, including the main Hongu and the Okumiya inner shrine located on the slopes of Mount Nantai; the Okumiya sits at higher elevation and is connected to mountain worship traditions.
- Precinct structures: Smaller subsidiary structures and walkways form part of the precinct, creating a wooded approach and a series of sacred spaces arranged across the Nikkō shrine area.
How to Get to Futarasan Shrine #

Tips for Visiting Futarasan Shrine #
- Visit Futarasan Shrine in the early morning to enjoy the quieter shrine grounds before the large tour groups arrive at nearby Toshogu; the shrine's forested precincts are more atmospheric with softer light.
- Plan your day in central Nikko on foot - Futarasan, Toshogu and Rinno‑ji are all within a short walk of each other, so seeing them together avoids extra transit and lets you move between sites while crowds concentrate on Toshogu.
- If you want to avoid big crowds or instead experience traditional events, note that Nikko's major Toshogu festivals (spring and autumn) draw large numbers - plan either to attend for the spectacle or to avoid those festival dates for a quieter visit.
Best Time to Visit Futarasan Shrine #
Best in spring (cherry blossoms) or autumn (fall foliage) for scenic displays around the shrine; expect larger crowds at peak colors.
