Funerary Tradition in the Prehistory of Sardinia – <em>The domus de janas</em>

A serial cultural property comprising rock-cut chamber tombs known as domus de janas found across Sardinia, representing a funerary tradition from the island’s prehistoric periods. These tombs are significant for their architectural forms and carved interior elements.

Groups of carved chambers hewn into natural rock outcrops, often arranged as multi-room complexes with carved motifs such as false doors, niches and anthropomorphic features. Many tombs retain plaster, painted decoration or cup-marks in their interiors.

The domus de janas were produced by farming communities in Sardinia during the Neolithic and subsequent prehistoric periods and were used over long durations as collective burial places. Their forms and decorations reflect local ritual practices and beliefs about the afterlife.
