Fulufjellet National Park
National Park Norwegian national park protecting mountain plateau and forests
Fulufjellet National Park sits on Norway’s border with Sweden; hikers come for mountain plateaus, alpine tundra and cross-border trails that link to the Swedish Fulufjället reserve.
Fulufjellet National Park is a protected mountainous area in southeastern Norway established by the Norwegian government to conserve an alpine plateau and surrounding mountain terrain. The park borders Sweden and forms a cross-border conservation landscape with the Swedish Fulufjället National Park.
The park comprises high mountain plateaus, birch-heath vegetation and remote river valleys that are used for low-intensity grazing and wilderness recreation. Trails and routes crossing the border allow extended hikes between Norwegian and Swedish protected areas.
Norway established the national park to protect the characteristic plateau environment and its natural processes; the designation formalized protection and management of an area that had been used for grazing and low-impact recreation. The park is managed to conserve its alpine ecosystems and to permit traditional land uses at sustainable levels.
Fulufjellet sits along the Norway-Sweden border in southern-central Norway, in the mountain zone that separates the Scandinavian interior from lower coastal areas. The nearest settled areas are small mountain communities on the Norwegian side and Swedish communities across the border; the park is accessed from regional roads and mountain tracks.
- Cross-border park: Directly adjacent to Sweden's Fulufjället National Park, offering continuity of protected alpine plateau across the border.
