Main image

Fulufjället National Park is a Swedish national park in Dalarna County, established to protect high plateau and mountain ecosystems on the Fulufjället massif. It is known for its dramatic waterfall and ancient tree specimens.

The Njupeskär waterfall, which has a free fall of about 93 metres, extensive open alpine plateau with peat bogs, and the clonal Norway spruce known as Old Tjikko, a genetic individual dated to several thousand years. The park offers marked trails for day hikes and viewpoints across the plateau.

The park was designated by the Swedish government in 2002 to conserve the unique alpine and subalpine habitats on Fulufjället and its associated geomorphology. Management focuses on protecting native vegetation, peatlands and freshwater features while permitting low-impact recreation.

Fulufjället National Park sits in western Dalarna County near the border with Norway in central Sweden, occupying upland terrain on the Fulufjället plateau. Access is via regional roads and local trailheads serving the park’s marked routes.

  • Protection status: The park was established to protect alpine plateau habitats, waterfalls and ancient woodland species; most visitor services are seasonal and concentrated at marked trailheads.
  • Visiting tips: Waterfall flow is strongest in spring and early summer; trails to the main falls and old-growth tree are well marked but can be wet and uneven, so good footwear is recommended.
