Fukuoka Castle
Ruins Ruined Edo-period castle in Fukuoka's Maizuru Park
Ruins of Fukuoka Castle sit inside Maizuru Park beside Ohori Park; stone walls, reconstructed turrets and cherry trees draw history buffs and photographers, with nearby museums and city food stalls.
Fukuoka Castle is an early 17th-century castle ruin in Chuo-ku, Fukuoka on Kyushu island, built as the seat of the regional Kuroda clan. The site is commonly referred to locally as Maizuru Castle and forms the core of a large urban park.
The site is notable for extensive surviving stone walls, moats and foundation platforms across a hillside site inside Maizuru Park. Visitors commonly explore walking paths that run along the ramparts and reach viewpoints overlooking Ohori Park and central Fukuoka; the grounds are also known for numerous cherry trees. Information boards and preserved foundations trace the original layout of baileys and defensive works.
Construction and early use date to the early Edo period when the castle was established by the Kuroda family as their regional seat. Many wooden buildings were removed or fell into ruin in the late 19th century, and the site was converted into a public park where remnants of the castle structure remain as ruins rather than intact buildings.
The castle stands on a hill immediately adjacent to Ohori Park and the Fukuoka City Museum in central Fukuoka. It is within the urban area of Fukuoka city, readily reached on foot or by short public-transport rides from central districts.
- Cherry blossom season: Peak bloom for the site's many cherry trees is typically late March to early April, when the park draws large local crowds.
- Easy central access: A short walk from the Ohori Park / Ohorikōen area of central Fukuoka, making it easy to combine with visits to the nearby museum and gardens.
What to See #
- Maizuru Park: Located within Maizuru Park, the main preserved area of the castle complex that includes gardens, walking paths and many of the surviving stone walls and moats.
- Stone walls and ramparts: Surviving stone walls, ramparts and base platforms for turrets and gates that mark the original layout of the castle; several vantage points on the hill offer views across central Fukuoka and Ohori Park.
- Former main gate area: Site near the former main gate and administrative compound where foundation stones and reconstructed gate features are visible to visitors.
