Fujian Tulou
Historical Site Large circular and rectangular earthen communal dwellings (tulou)
Clustered in Fujian’s hills, tulou are large circular and rectangular earthen communal buildings; tourists photograph their masonry, learn Hakka household traditions and explore surrounding rice terraces.
A group of large earthen communal dwellings in Fujian Province known collectively as Fujian tulou, constructed by local communities as multi-storey, multi-family residences with defensive characteristics. They are notable examples of vernacular rammed-earth architecture.
Distinctive round and rectangular rammed-earth buildings rising three to five storeys around an internal courtyard, housing living quarters, storerooms and ancestral halls. The largest examples have diameters approaching 60 metres and can accommodate several hundred people in concentric arrangements of rooms.
Many tulou display minimal external openings and solid, thick walls for defence, while internal courtyards and communal facilities reflect collective living. Several clusters include exemplary individual buildings that are open to visitors and present traditional layouts and household artefacts.
Tulou developed as fortified communal housing in Fujian and surrounding areas over several centuries, with many surviving examples dating largely from the Ming and Qing periods into the 19th and early 20th centuries. They reflect social organisation, clan structure and responses to security needs in a rural landscape.
The tulou clusters are dispersed across the hilly, rural counties of southwestern Fujian province, in areas of mixed farmland and woodland; principal concentrations are in Yongding and Nanjing counties.
- Number and scale: The UNESCO property comprises 46 tulou structures across several counties in Fujian, many built between the 12th and 20th centuries, with some round buildings reaching around 60 metres in diameter.
- Construction and layout: Walls are constructed of rammed earth up to around 1.5-1.8 metres thick, with few exterior openings and an inward-facing central courtyard that served communal life and defence.
