Fuchengmen
Historical Site Historic city gate location in northwest Beijing
At the site of Beijing’s former western city gate, Fuchengmen functions today as a transport hub with subway connections and busy arterial roads; visitors encounter market streets and access to central Xicheng district sites.
Fuchengmen was a western gate in Beijing’s historic inner city wall, part of the series of gates that enclosed the old city. The gate dated from the Ming dynasty city wall system and stood on the western side of the inner city.
Little of the original gate survives today; the site is now dominated by road overpasses and a major traffic interchange on Beijing’s 2nd Ring Road, with surrounding commercial streets that retain the Fuchengmen name. The area functions as a busy transport and commercial node rather than a preserved historic monument.
The gate formed part of Beijing’s defensive and transport infrastructure from the Ming and Qing periods through the early 20th century; it was removed during mid-20th century urban redevelopment to make way for modern roads.
The location is in west-central Beijing, on the western side of the historic city centre near the 2nd Ring Road in present-day Xicheng District.
- What to look for: No intact gate structure remains; the location is marked by road infrastructure, street names and a transport interchange rather than preserved Ming-era architecture.
