Frick Madison

Frick Madison is the temporary home of the Frick Collection in New York City, opened in 2021 while the museum’s main building on East 70th Street is closed for renovation. It occupies the Marcel Breuer-designed building at 945 Madison Avenue, a notable modernist structure completed in 1966.

The installation presents European paintings, sculpture, and decorative arts from the Frick Collection, including works by Old Master painters and important examples of Italian and Dutch art. The Breuer building’s larger, more austere galleries allow different arrangements and sightlines than the original Frick mansion, often grouping paintings and sculpture across more open, high-ceilinged spaces.

The museum also stages temporary exhibitions and rehangs that take advantage of the Breuer building’s scale, and visitors can expect a contrast between the Frick’s intimate domestic displays and the Breuer galleries’ monumentality. The site remains part of Manhattan’s museum district, making it accessible alongside other institutions on the Upper East Side.

The building was designed by Marcel Breuer and completed in 1966 for the Whitney Museum of American Art. The Whitney occupied the site until relocating, after which the Frick Collection moved key works into the Breuer building in 2021 as a temporary exhibition venue while the Frick’s historic mansion undergoes restoration.

Situated on Madison Avenue on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, the museum sits within walking distance of Central Park and the concentration of institutions known as Museum Mile. The site is easily reached from Midtown Manhattan and nearby subway lines.
