Freyung is a historic square and small neighbourhood in Vienna’s Innere Stadt (1st district), known for its monastery complex and cluster of historic townhouses. The square lies within Vienna’s medieval core and forms part of the city’s central pedestrian area.
The square is dominated by the monastic complex of the Schottenstift and surrounded by historic townhouses and small streets that connect to Herrengasse and the Graben. It is a compact area with cafés, shops and a number of preserved facades that reflect Vienna’s imperial-era urban fabric.
The site has been important since the Middle Ages because of the abbey at the square; urban development around Freyung consolidated in the early modern period as wealthy families built town palaces there. The square has retained its role as a quiet historic focal point within the central district.
