French Quarter
Historical Site Historic New Orleans neighborhood famed for French colonial architecture
Historic New Orleans district with narrow streets, French and Spanish colonial architecture, jazz clubs and Creole restaurants; visitors come for live music, architecture walks and well‑known streets like Bourbon and Royal.
The French Quarter, also called the Vieux Carré, is the historic heart of New Orleans, Louisiana, centered on the crescent bend of the Mississippi River. Established in the early 18th century, it is the city’s oldest neighbourhood and a major tourist district.
A compact urban area of narrow streets, wrought-iron balconies, and historic masonry buildings containing a high density of restaurants, bars, music venues, and galleries. Key focal points include public open spaces, riverfront markets, and streets such as Bourbon Street famous for nightlife.
Cultural highlights include regular live jazz, street performances around Jackson Square, religious and architectural interest at St. Louis Cathedral, and food and craft vendors at the French Market. The quarter hosts year-round festivals and sees especially high activity during Carnival and major public events.
Founded by French colonists in 1718, the French Quarter later passed to Spanish administration and then back to French and American control; its buildings reflect successive architectural influences from these periods. Preservation efforts in the 20th century have maintained much of its historic fabric and street plan.
Located along the Mississippi River in downtown New Orleans, the French Quarter is bounded roughly by Canal Street to the west and Esplanade Avenue to the east, with the river forming its southern edge.
