Freiburg Minster

The Freiburg Minster (Freiburger Münster) is the historic cathedral of Freiburg im Breisgau in southwestern Germany, noted for its Gothic architecture and distinctive tower. The church is a civic and religious landmark on the city’s central square.

The cathedral houses a large nave, medieval stained glass and sculptural decoration; its tower, rising to roughly 116 metres, serves as a prominent viewpoint over the city and surrounding Black Forest region. The adjacent Münsterplatz hosts markets and provides direct public access to the church’s west front and portals.

Construction began in the late 12th and early 13th centuries, with major Gothic phases continuing into the 14th century; the tower and much of the visible Gothic fabric date to the high medieval period. The building has served continuously as a parish church and survived wartime damage that affected other parts of the city.

The Minster stands in Freiburg’s old town on Münsterplatz, at the heart of the city and near tram and pedestrian thoroughfares, with the Black Forest hills visible to the east.
