Frei is an island and former municipality in Møre og Romsdal county on Norway’s western coast. It was an independent municipality until it merged into Kristiansund municipality on 1 January 2008.
The island features a mix of rocky coastline, sheltered bays and agricultural land with scattered villages and local roads linking settlements. There are modest hills and coastal viewpoints that give views across nearby fjords and to the islands and mainland around Kristiansund.
The area functioned as its own municipality for much of the 19th and 20th centuries before the 2008 merger into Kristiansund. Local life has traditionally been tied to fishing, farming and maritime trade.
Frei sits in Møre og Romsdal off Norway’s Atlantic coast, immediately adjacent to the municipal centre of Kristiansund and within the archipelago of islands and fjords that characterize the region.
