Freetown Christiania
Section of Populated Place Self-managed Copenhagen district with alternative culture and community
Copenhagen’s Freetown Christiania is an autonomous quarter known for painted houses, collective ateliers and street art; tourists visit for alternative cafés, galleries and a distinctive local social experiment.
Freetown Christiania is a self-declared autonomous district in the Christianshavn quarter of Copenhagen, established by residents in 1971 on former military land. It is known for alternative communal living, street art, and small-scale creative businesses.
Streets of low-rise wooden houses, studios, cafés and community spaces form the core attractions, along with canal-side paths and public artworks. The area is compact and typically explored on foot, with informal markets, music venues and galleries run by residents.
Originally occupied by squatters, the area developed its own social rules and institutions and has undergone repeated legal and administrative negotiations with Danish authorities. Over the decades it has changed from an extra-legal enclave to a neighbourhood with negotiated arrangements between residents and the state.
Christiania sits on the Christianshavn peninsula next to Copenhagen’s harbour; it is within the central city area and is a short walk from central Copenhagen attractions.
- Photography and local rules: Photography is discouraged in certain areas, notably the street where drug sales have concentrated, and visitors are asked to respect local rules.
- Access: Christiania is reached on foot from central Copenhagen and is adjacent to the Christianshavn waterfront and canals; nearby public transport includes Christianshavn station.
What to See #
- Pusher Street: A narrow street known locally for the open sale of cannabis for many years and which has been the focus of police and political attention.
- Workshops and communal spaces: A mix of communal housing, artist workshops, cafés and small galleries created and run by residents, concentrated around low-rise wooden buildings and reclaimed military structures.
- Canal and waterfront areas: Canal-side paths and small green spaces that link Christiania to the surrounding Christianshavn neighbourhood and harbourfront.

- Enter Christiania via the main gate on Prinsessegade (the common arrival point from Christianshavn) and follow posted local rules; photographing people and the open cannabis stalls is strongly discouraged by the community.
- Walk beyond the market area to discover murals, community workshops, lakeside paths and cafés-the residential and artistic parts of Christiania are easy to miss if you only stay on the main thoroughfare.
