Fredriksten is a historic fortress overlooking the town of Halden in southeastern Norway, built to guard the border region against Swedish attack. It is known for its well-preserved bastions and defensive works.
Broad ramparts, stone bastions and a central citadel define the visible complex and are accessible to visitors as open walkways and museum spaces. Interpretive displays and preserved military structures recount the site’s defensive role and sieges.
Fortifications at the site were developed in the 17th century under Danish-Norwegian rule as part of a fortified border system; the fortress was repeatedly contested in wars with Sweden. The site is historically notable as the location where King Charles XII of Sweden was killed during a 1718 siege.
Perched above the town of Halden in the former Østfold region, the fortress overlooks the Oslofjord approach and sits close to the modern Norwegian-Swedish border.
